I think Britain is not happy with its old people. Calling someone a pensioner seems like an insult. To me, it’s as if old people are seen just as problems.
I think often they’re not seen at all.
Everyone forgets that pensioners now weren’t pensioners in the past. A pensioner now could have done anything you can possibly imagine in years gone by. I think Britain these days doesn’t even seem able to understand that old people are doing all sorts of things right now.
Old people are only thought about for their illnesses or their disabilities or their frailties, never their strengths. Their skills and their knowledge and their cares and their loves – nothing about them seems to matter. Humour, fun, passions, interests – they’re all ignored.
It’s as if the only thing that’s noticed is whatever it is that makes someone think someone else is old. They don’t notice the actual person.
Hardly anyone puts old people first. Most big-business bosses don’t and nor do most shop keepers. Most advertisers hardly notice them. Almost everyone in government – they only notice the old if they’re forced to. The only time bankers and all that lot pay old people any attention is if they think they can get money out of them. And if they can’t get make a profit out of them, they’d rather just shut the door on everyone who retires. Shut the door on them all. Shunt them off in to a care home, knowing they’ll only come out again in a coffin.
I don’t know how all these people can be so ignorant. It’s the wrong approach and it’s a stupid approach. I don’t think it’s hard to realise that.
It’s stupid because everyone’s world would be better if we valued everyone equally, if we treated everyone equally.
Life is about learning. If you’re not always learning then you’re wasting your life. The old people I know have experience they’re happy to share. Younger people I know have all sorts of new things they could share with older people. Everyone wins if we live as one big group, if we’re not divided up in to old or young.
And what’s even more stupid is it’s obvious that we’ll all get old. Most people know someone who’s old. If they don’t, they will. So it’s obvious that living as one big group, not divided up into old people or young people, can benefit everyone.
But even learning from the obvious seems hard. I don’t know why. It’s all one huge recipe for sadness.
